happy holidays!

in my "i'm-way-behind-on-blogging" anxiety, i forgot to wish all of you some happy holidays!
do it with a nice sized drink (or shot) and a mustache ring, ok?

just don't do it with tequila. tequila and i broke up a few days ago. waking up to an extreme headache is not my idea of a good time.

from ny to cali

this picture means more to me than you can understand. seriously. that's not to say that i don't have dozens of favorite photos of my favoritist people in the whole wide world, but the reason this picture means so much to me tells a story 20+ years in the making.

when i was in 3rd grade and 8 years old, my teacher, mrs. sonnenburg, had us participate in a pen pal exchange with a school in california. I guess my class had the honor of reading generic letters from this other school and then we would have to respond to them. our teacher walked around the room plopping letters on our desks based on gender and i received a letter from a boy who's name had been mistaken for a girl. the very last line of his letter read, "you might think i'm a girl but i'm actually a boy." so my little 3rd grade self ran up to the teacher and got a new letter.

what a difference this letter was - it was written on pretty paper with nice girly penmanship. my memory is poor for details and i can't recall what was in that letter, but it was from a girl named sara who probably wrote about how much she loved music. we spent the whole year writing letters to each other and then at the end of the year we formally exchanged home addresses. i'm not sure what i was expecting other than the occasional letter in the mail (i loooooove snail mail...still love it) but what blossomed is a friendship that spans 20+ years and countless letters.

i still have a lot of the letters sara wrote to me over the years and love to sit down and read them at times. they tell the story of a girl who grows up into a teenager and then a wonderful adult. i'm not just saying that because i think sara is one of the most wonderful people i know, but because i've had the the great fortune of growing up with her. there's so much in her letters about my own life and experiences that i can only imagine what the hell i was telling her. she told me that she still has the letters i wrote her which i would love to someday read.

i've never had the opportunity to head out to california myself but a few weeks ago i received a facebook message that said something like, "i'll be in nyc! we need to try and meet up! you know this fall marks our 20 year." my response was a big fat - "WHAT!" i think my heart was literally jumping out of my body. i couldn't believe that this person who i have literally poured my whole entire soul to would be in ny. so i marked my calendar and waited.

when sara finally got to ny, we made plans to have dinner with some of her friends on the friday of her trip. i think that my nerves took over as i started to worry about this meeting. would she like me? would she think i'm incredibly annoying? would i like her? would we have anything to talk about?
 i'm a worrier.

but what actually happened was better than i could have imagined. here's a person who i have written to my entire life in front of me, and even though it was our first time meeting face to face, we know each other. and we know a lot about each other. and nothing can really take that away. i think it's hard for people to understand how i could have sustained a friendship with someone through letters for so long, but i feel blessed to have had this experience. to have a connection with someone who lives miles and miles away, who you never get to see in person. it's amazing. it makes you feel more connected to the world and the people in it.

so back to this picture - this is our first picture together! it still feels really surreal to think that we actually met, but then i look at this picture and remember. i feel really lucky to have known sara my whole life and even luckier to have met her in person finally.

a chicago story

once upon a time, there was a lovely girl named missDTM who went out to chicago to visit her lovely bff.
they did a lot of eating during this trip. but a major highlight of the trip was hugging a gray pit bull.
while there, missDTM and her boo had the chance to visit the famous bean in millenium park.
they also decided to dress up as an angry bird and the green pig. yes, they really went out and about in chicago in these outfits.
the night was full of crazy costumes and wonderful friends.
but missDTM's least favorite part was ripping off the crazy fake eyelashes she was wearing!
the freaking end.

yes, ladies and gents, i made my way to the midwest last week. if you follow me on twitter, you would know that i literally ate my way through the town. no seriously, i ate. a lot. and fell in love with chicago. ny is cool and all but chicago is affordable and cool. those are two things i looooooove.

another thing i love is halloween. why isn't it acceptable for grown folks to get dressed up in crazy costumes more often? and when/how can i host a dress up party of my own every month of 2012?!? definitely thinking about doing that....these eyelashes make me want to do it!

i know i have been terrible at blogging lately but it literally takes about 20 minutes to upload one pic. ok, i'm exaggerating, but for real - 20 minutes for these 6 pics. that's a long time! i've been trying to get the problem fixed but customer service sucks ass.

i will try and be better about blogging in these last few weeks of 2011. for real. the holidays are my favorite time of year anyway so i should be blogging more!

xoxo

where, oh where, has DTM been?

i've been distracted. there, i said it.

reasons i've been so distracted:

* ending my relationship with american apparel.
* perfecting my curls.
* dinner with friends at the best burger spot in nyc.
* this britney spears song.
* planning for my trip to chicago (HOLLER).
* creating my awesome halloween outfit from scratch.
* making pirate patches and roaming around the upper west side on sunday.

whoa

i'm not gonna lie - i've been a pretty terrible blogger this month. not only are my friends commenting on my lack of posts, but even i am starting to wonder what the hell is wrong with me.

the only thing i can say about my absence is:

* work...is kicking my butt.
* i'm trying to put some plans in place for myself.
* it's impossible to fit everything i want to do in 24 hours.
* sleep is no longer my friend...
* ...which makes me not get anything done.

but, i celebrated my birthday this month! since i didn't capture my very cute birthday outfit, i figured i would at least showcase my awesome gifts:

this "black book" is my new...
...ipad! i am in loveeeeeeeeeee. my fam pitched in and got it for me. i'm a lucky girl.
amazing jewelry:

my mom got me the earrings and my sister got me the "d" necklace.

the cuatro (a 10-stringed spanish guitar) from my cousin...he'll be happy i posted this.

so yea, that's what's up.

iscream, ipad

for my bday, my family pitched in and got me a gift certificate to apple so i could order an ipad for myself. holler. my dreams have come true.

so when i ordered my ipad tonight, i knew i needed to order an ipad case. so i started an online search and came across this awesome case from pad&quill:

an ipad case that looks like a moleskine?!? whattttt! i want.

while doing that, i also checked out this itouch case:

so, yea, i ordered both.

no eye makeup

i have a confession to make: i love eye makeup.
it's almost to the point of obsession. maybe it's the artist in me that loves playing around with eye makeup? which is why you will probably never catch me leaving the house without mascara, eyeliner and some eye shadow on. either way, this obsession started years ago (after college) when i first started experimenting with makeup.

but, here is a pic of yours truly with no eye makeup on:

there is, of course, a story behind why i am not wearing any eye makeup in this pic (and why my eye looks so funny in this pic). late last night, something got into my eye and i desperately tried to get it out for over an hour. i started freaking out, the boo took me to the ER and 2 hours later i returned home with a numb eyeball. i woke up 2.5 hours later to get up for work and my eye still had the sensation of something being in it. so i started to worry even more.
i went to work, called my primary doctor, set up an appointment for 12:20 and ran over there. my doc didn't even look at my eye--she immediately sent me to the optometrist where they did the normal eye tests (20/20 vision, holler!) and then the doc examined me. i have a strange fear of anyone putting drops in my eyes or touching my eyes or flipping my eyelids so i was bugging out inside. luckily, doc was really sweet and promised to get me all better before my bday on monday. she did end up flipping my lid and found the teeny tiniest of smut under there and removed it. i was given some antibiotic eye drops and sent on my way.
i figured i would take a break from eye makeup for the next day or two until my eye feels better. i am hoping to be all better by my bday on monday (even though when i asked the boo about doing dinner on monday. he looked at me as though i have 15 heads...sigh). but here i am--no eye makeup, on my blog. hopefully i don't look too crazy/weird looking/blah.

on another note, check out my new skull necklace. yes, i made it myself.

4.15.11 morning

My morning breakfast at work. That's coffee on the left and oatmeal on the right.

Yes, I'm at work this early AM. Do you want to know why? Well, I'm actually off from work tomorrow. I have a Saturday off. And I'm going to enjoy it...by sleeping and relaxing and enjoying my day off. Like normal people do on Saturdays.

Enjoy the weekend!

4.12.11 update and inspiration

i feel like i've been going on "GO" for the past month and a half. and it's actually starting to feel like i have barely had a day off to chill, sleep and relax. even when there are "fun things" going on, it's always followed quickly with other important responsibilities. i LOVE being busy...but i would also love to sleep...and relax...and...yea, all of that good stuff.

but i can't complain much. it's better to be busy than stagnant.

on another note, i miss making art. like, a lot. so i enrolled in an online sketchbooking course and have bought myself some books to get inspired. i am hoping to get back into art as the weather gets a lot nicer. i am also trying to convince some friends of mine to start a weekly art group so that i feel responsible to do art with folks. that would be sweet.

speaking of getting back in gear, here's some inspiration lately around the interwebs:

solange's whole style lately is on point.
 i.must.get.back.into.art. period.
hello. i would love to make and wear all of these bracelets.
yes, i want these glasses. like, for real.

that's all, folks!

4.3.11

Do you see that medal!?!?!

Yesterday marked my second half marathon. Ever in life. Last year's I was way more prepared for but this year...not so much. I did a run/walk of it and completed it in less than 3 hours. Huge accomplishment considering I thought it would take me 4 or I would end up on the side of the course completely exhausted.

Super shout out to my girl, Jessie, who did it with me. She was completely prepared for it and probably could have completed it in 2 hours. She's a wonderful friend for run/walking with me.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

food 1.22.11

Last night I had time to flex my cooking skills by making the boo some chicken parm and salad for dinner. I received no help from him-his only requirement was to sit back, have a drink and tell me how his day was.

I had to snap a pic of the final product as proof that I actually made this meal. Tonight is the boo's turn...

D's newest obsession

my name is missDTM and i have a confession to make:

i am OBSESSED with my new phone. although it's taking a while for me to get used to my droid (and i keep making stupid mistakes on it), i absolutely, 100% love it. it's so smart. i love the google network.

so, in honor of my phone, here's the android version of me:

AND! since i'm sharing my picture, i figured i would share my newest bio which i created. do you know how hard it is to write a personal but short bio for yourself? TOUGH! tougher than tough. it's the toughest thing i've had to do.

but, here it is:
Darcy and her dog, Dunkin Donut, share a love for cuddling, eating and sleeping. When Darcy is busy at work on her newest craft or art projects, Dunkin can be found sleeping in her crate or chewing on her favorite raw hides. Although Darcy was born and raised in the Bronx, they have both spent time in Brooklyn - Darcy while attending Pratt and Dunkin in a pet shop. On their free time, they both love to lay in the sun at the park with friends or compete for attention from Darcy’s boyfriend.

over the next few posts, i'll probably share some of the ramblings i created when i was working on my bio. but, for now, i am happy with my short little paragraph.

happy thursday!
it's my friday (kinda sorta) and i'll be running down to the bowery poetry club after work to see my boo perform. if you're in nyc tonight, stop by!

big curly hair

guess who i met in person!
(btw--how amazing does our hair look in this pic?!?)

and here's a shot of me in the shorts i made for myself (no pattern used):
that pic does no justice for my handmade crocheted shorts...

so the story behind those shorts goes a little something like this:
me (on a tuesday): i wanna make some shorts to wear to the boo's bday party. but the online free patterns  are all corny.
my friends: i don't know how you're going to do that...
tuesday after work - i picked up yarn, started working.
by friday, 4am - the shorts were done.
i was able to wear them for the boo's bday party at night.
and the rest is history.

New in the shop!

i have been super duper tired lately so blogging hasn't been on the top of my to do list...although i think about it everyday. i'm not quite sure what's up with me feeling this way--maybe it's because i have completely cut down on coffee? or the way i sleep? or...i don't want to say it because i fear the repercussions--i'm getting sick!
that would be terrible. whenever i get sick, i get SICK. so i am doing everything i can to prevent anything from happening to me this year.

i have taken the time to update the shop though. i have some new stones that i'm working with so the effect is pretty cool. there's some stuff i need to rotate out of the shop but for now there are two new rings you can check out here and here.

side  note: i actually took the time yesterday to update my "about me" section here on the blog, as well as my twitter account avatar and bio. i'm not sure how i feel about both bio's...but i'm working on them. for some strange reason, it's hard for me to talk about myself. in the meantime, you can check it out. and when i update it again, i will let you know. i'm thinking about writing a longer bio here on my blog...we'll see though...

i'm happy it's saturday, and the weekend, and a 3 day weekend. anyone have any exciting plans for this weekend?

D's catch up

here i am, catching up since it's been a few weeks.

to recap:
the boo + me + his bff + his bff's gf = nyc santacon. i was dressed as an elf!
potluck dinner parties with coloring and a game named "celebrity" = way too much fun. and way too much food.
new years 2011. (my hair was looking GOOD that night).

and just for fun, here's a pic of a helmet i made for myself:
because i wanted to. and because finding a crocheted pattern for an aviator hat is kinda hard.

D's thank you

 happy thanksgiving!

my family is pretty laid back when it comes to thanksgiving and the table setting, but if it were up to me, i would love to recreate this for our dinner:
*love*

anyway, there are always things to be thankful for. my list:

michael's arts and crafts store.
late night shawarma after a night of drinking.
lazy sundays.
my big curly hair.
big chunky jewelry.
dunkin "deathwish" donut.
and most of all: my family, boo and friends.

in honor of...

my 10 year hs reunion this weekend...
HS yearbook pics of me!

my senior pic.

and pics of me playing field hockey. yes, i played field hockey in hs...scary.

this weekend will be a blast from the past. i'm looking forward to seeing my bff, catching up with people i haven't seen in 10 years, and reminiscing about hs. kinda. maybe not.

happy weekend! i promise to have better hs pics in the upcoming week.

D's shy?

here's a fact about me:

i'm shy.
really really really shy. i hate taking solo pics of myself and hate seeing myself in pics. it's weird. so taking pics for my blog is just weird to me...even though i do like to document some of my outfits.

but...sometimes i like to play with the camera on my computer. especially when dunkin's around! so here are the best shots i took with my puppy the other day:
the top one is my favorite.

i might start playing around with this whole portrait idea though...let's see...

happy thursday!

ring a ding ding....

my stupid camera always turns on in my bag and then runs out of battery before i can actually take any pics. it's annoying. and since i'm not staying at home this week, i don't have my charger. so i had to take pics with my blackberry...which isn't high quality but hey--it gets the job done!

with that being said, i'm obsessed with:

1. my nailpolish. it's THE REAL TEAL by sally hansen. i love sally hansen.
2. my double finger ring. i made it myself. and yes, i am selling them too. if you want to order one, hit me up. i'm taking orders now via email but will also be opening a shop soon.
3. my new h&m animal rings. can i just say that they are lovely? i randomly found a 4-5 ring stack at h&m on a random peg and HAD to have them.
today's ring? a hare. which is fitting since i told the boo the other day that it would be awesome to own a bunny and walk it on a leash.
